Hiya! Happy New Year to you. I hope you enjoyed the holiday and took some well-deserved rest. Welcome to all 27 of you who subscribed since my last letter, I am so excited to have you here.
First, an announcement:
For the whole of Q1 (January to March), I’m available for 1:1 community chat via audio call or WhatsApp. It’s totally FREE and we’d get to just chat about everything community, and we brainstorm together.
Life this Week…
Life this week has included working on a proposal for a community while worrying whether it was good enough and that led me to asking for templates from others. Much didn’t come through and so I decided to trust my guts and the presentation went pretty well.
Away from that, I’ve been on a learning spree (I’m always on a learning spree 😅), and this week I leaned into my emails and Substack to catch up and learn.
Here is something I shared last year that a lot of people found helpful…
Someone asked;
Pls how will you advise a first time community manager, managing a community of creatives(photographers, videographers, artists and models…) to reach first 500-1000 people in the first month and keep them engaged. With core focus on community growth and engagement.
My response:
Know where these people are gathered the most and create content/programs that would attract them to your community. When putting out content, let your CTA be to join the community and also make standalone posts that promote the community and its benefits.
Ensure that you have a seamless onboarding process- cause if it’s complicated, you might lose the people who want to be a part of the community.
Encourage those in the community to invite those in their network. If necessary, a referral program can be introduced.
For engagement, understand these;
- Who are your community members when they arrive?
- Who are they looking to become?
- What do they need to do to become that person?
List those actions that would get your members closer to becoming who they want to become and narrow down the list to just a handful of actions that you can support. Then plan your engagement programs around that.
More can be done depending on the stage your community is but these are the basis to begin with.
(That 4th point is something Tatiana Figueiredo shared about Engagement last year that I have kept close to my heart)
And that’s that!
I got to share a few helpful links on the chats earlier today, you can check it out!
