🧵Super Members and their Rewards
Hi again! It’s me, Martha.
I’m excited to write to you again and yeah, Happy September 🎉 Make it count!
Today we are talking about Super Members
Who they are
How to reward them
P.S. Today’s letter is heavily supported by this article from the CMX Blog.
Every community has a group of people who are more engaged, more enthusiastic, more vocal, and more helpful. They are the biggest supporters in any community.
They go by many titles like super users, champions, superstars, fans, inner circle, etc.
Whatever name they are called, they are critical to the health and growth of any community.
Wherever you find yourself as a CM, nurturing this group of members is an important part of your role.
How do you reward super members?
We can’t just toss some goods over the fence and hope they continue doing the behaviors we want to see. We can’t make their engagement with our company or with our community a transactional one (“If you do X, I’ll give you Y”).
Jake McKee
The most idea that some people have whenever reward is mentioned are SWAGS. Swags are great, they are sweet to have and show everyone what you got.
But regardless of the reward (swags or not), you need to understand that rewards have to match the community’s mission and connect to your members to their identities and/or ambitions.
Jake McKee shared an interesting approach on the CMX blog and I’m sharing that with you today.
So how do we encourage more community members to step up into a super user role? How do we get existing super users to keep on doing what they do so well? We have to first think beyond incentives like free t-shirts, and start thinking in terms of multi-faceted motivations. We have to stop asking “what rewards do we need to give away?” Our question is really “what is the incentive stack that motivates super users?”
Identity Reward Ideas
Special avatars or badges that specifically brand them as members of the super members' program. These badges should be made a part of their personal profile.
Have a column on your community website where current and former super members are listed on.
Have a community event or press releases that celebrate and appreciate these members.
Privileges Reward Ideas
Private groups for super members to engage with each other.
Opportunities to meet and engage the community leaders more directly.
Direct path to offer feedback on the community from a member’s perspective.
Give them early access to top content/information
Tangibles Reward Ideas
Branded and designed t-shirts, stickers, and other gears.
A gift that is part of onboarding super members when they’re granted (or re-granted) access to the program. This gift marks their participation.
Offer discount event/product prices.
From these ideas, you can always choose what works for your community because how you best reward super members is totally dependent on your community.
Please Note:
A super member program should be exclusive ‘cause the more exclusive you make it, the more rewarding it becomes to be a member.
Better yet, the smaller it is, the better time, attention, and rewards you can give to each member.
